Every Reading Specialist in Massachusetts  passes the MTEL Reading Specialist  Exam to acquire licensure.  Other states also use the MTEL for Reading Specialist.
- New revisions to the Subject Matter Knowledge (SMK) content guide for this licensure are proposed for PUBLIC COMMENT by March 29, 2019.
Important points include:
  1. The science of reading including the National Reading Panel and the reading criteria defined by Congress, 20 U.S.C. § 6368(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)
  2. Identifying the distinguishing characteristics of diverse learner profiles, including the strengths and needs commonly demonstrated by multilingual students, and students with reading disabilities including dyslexia.
  3. Brain science research, including how the brain learns to read, the four processing systems and and neurobiological impacts on reading development.
You can find more information about the SMK for Reading Specialists and find an additional link to complete a public comment survey at this  link. www.doe.mass.edu/news/news.aspx?id=25373
